Send-in calibration typically offers lower cost and access to fully equipped lab environments, but adds shipping time and risk of transit-induced damage. On-site calibration avoids transport risk and keeps instruments in production longer, but may cost more and limit the lab's available reference standards. Yes. A valid calibration certificate must document an unbroken traceability chain back to national or international measurement standards such as NIST. The certificate should explicitly state the reference standards used and their own calibration status. Certificates lacking this chain are unacceptable under ISO 9001, AS9100, and most regulated-industry quality systems, and will generate nonconformities during audits.

For most regulated industries, accreditation to ISO/IEC 17025 is the baseline requirement. Bodies like A2LA, NVLAP, and ILAC-recognized accreditors independently verify that a lab's procedures, equipment, and personnel meet defined competency standards. In-house calibration is permissible but requires validated procedures and documented traceability. Non-accredited providers are a common audit red flag under AS9100 and ISO 13485, and can call your entire QMS into question.

A compliant certificate should identify the instrument by make, model, and serial number; state the calibration date and due date; reference the traceability chain to national standards; list the measurement results and any as-found/as-left data; and be signed by a qualified technician. Vague certificates that omit measurement data or traceability references are red flags and will not satisfy auditors. Always review certificates on receipt before filing them.
